Sergie grew up Pikov, Russia where he began to skate at the age of three. He then joined the Russian Red Army team and proved his skills to the world and the United States at the age of 18. He was drafted in 1991 to the Detroit Red Wings.

He was runner-up to the Calder Trophy and named an All-Rookie team forward, 1990-91. He forged his team with 56 goals and 64 assists and 120 points as the Red Wings won the Central Division title in 93-94. He led the Wings with 39 goals, 68 assists and 107 points as the Red Wings and won the Central Division title and the Presidents' Trophy with a league-record 62 wins, 1995-96
