Great
Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978
The Agreement, first signed
in 1972 and renewed in 1978, expresses the commitment of each country to
restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of
the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem and includes a number of objectives and
guidelines to achieve these goals. It reaffirms the rights and obligation
of Canada and the United States under the Boundary
Waters Treaty and has become a major focus of Commissionactivity.
Great
Lakes Charter Agreement of 1985
The
Great Lakes Charter is a non-binding agreement between the Great
Lakes Governors and
Premiers of the Great Lakes States.
The Governors and Premiers
of the Great Lakes States and Provinces jointly find and declare that;
The water resources of the Great Lakes Basin are precious public natural
resources, shared and held in trust by the Great Lakes States and Provinces."

In July of 1970, the White House and Congress worked
together to establish the EPA in response to the growing public demand
for cleaner water, air and land. The EPA offers a conprehensive History
of the EPA. The Office of Ground Water and
Drinking Water
(OGWDW)
along with EPA's ten regional drinking water programs, oversees implementation
of the Safe Drinking Water Act, which is the national law safeguarding
tap water in America
The
Blue Planet Project is an international effort begun by The Council
of Canadians to protect the world's fresh water from the
growing threats of
trade and privatization.
The Water
Resource Center (WRC) is a contractor-operated
facility at EPA Headuarters providing document delivery,information
/referral, and reference services to public users and
EPA staff interested in Office of Water
Program information.
