Ameins Cathedral

Ameins Cathedral

Location:

Ameins, France

Time Frame:

1218 to 1288

Building Style:

Gothic

Artist/Builder:

Robert de Luzarches

Information:

Ameins Cathedral actually replaced the previous church, which was dedicated to the first bishop of Ameins (St. Fermin), that stood on the same site. The nave was much higher than normal and in comparison to Reims. The piers that support the transverse arches run the complete height of the nave. From the capital that supports the vaulting, ribs expand towards the center of the vault for the main support and two (2) minor ribs expand outwards in a diagonal direction to meet in the center of two (2) main ribs. At the chior end of the cathedral, there are a total of seven (7) radiating chapels.
