Cathedral of Durham

Location:

England

Time Frame:

1033-1193

Building Style:

Romanesque

Artist/Builder:

Bishop William de Carlief

Information:

The church was the first significant piece of architecture to be built during the medieval time period. This was due to the fact that it was a military focal point for the northern part of England, but also the religious base. The nave and chior had a combination of clustered and circular shaped piers which were fashioned with decorative patterns. At the top of each pier was a capital that supported the ribbed like vualting that dreaws over the nave and chior. On the second story or level, the gallary was transformed into more of a triforium which displayed two window like openings into the nave. The vualts and ribbed like arches helped inspire the gothic style of architecture to develop.
