Released in 1987 Wim Wenders landmark "Wings of Desire" is a beautiful film that follows the journey of angels in the city of Berlin as they accompany humans of all walks of life through their daily trials. Unable to directly interact with the real world, one angel Damiel yearns for the ability to feel as the humans do and begins a journey into the realm of the living. Spoken in German with English subtitles, watching the film could be likened to reading a novel or having a conversation. Wender's subtle revelations of the implicit beauty in the minute details of the human condition emerge like the intricate stitching of a fine tapestry. It is somber and thought-provoking yet quirky and enchanting at the same time and its true strength is the emphasis upon the atmosphere it creates over the story it tells. One of the most marvelous aspects of the film is the truly superb execution of acting, cinematography, direction, etc. It is rare witness a movie, or any story, that achieves a vision to such fruition as this film does. Highly acclaimed by critics and viewers alike, "Wings of Desire" is a must see film.
