Its very easy to choose the quickest and simplest method, but don't be fooled, think of the quality. If quality is what you want, then the natural way is the way to go.

Whether you have nappy, curly or straight hair the natural methods will work, just be patient. Tam it up recomentds Palm Rolling, braiding, teasing and back combing.

Natural Methods that work for everyone:

Braids:
Braids are a neat method to start natural dreads. Braid your hair as thick or thin as you want your dreads to be, and leave them in indefinitely. In time, you will have solid beautiful locks.

Twisting and Palm Rolling:
Twisting and palm rolling are a great method of starting your dreads. To begin section your hair as you would for braiding (grid like). Starting from the sections closest to your neck up to top of your head, take each sections of hair (one at a time) and put it through your middle fingers, role it into as tight a ball as you can by rubbing your palms over the hair in a circular motion. This may be tiresome and even burn your palms a little. Ask for help from a friend, for those hard to reach sections, and don't give up. Keep dong this to your hair over and over and in time your hair will begin to lock permanently. Twisting and Palm Rolling is a sure way to get tight and spunky locks. (Use string if you want to help keep your hair together)

Back Combing: :
To aid the dread process along, you can also combine this method with the palm rolling, twisting and teasing.

Neglects Method: :
Wash your hair constantly with a solution of sea salt and do nothing else. Your hair will look 'out of control' for some time, but eventually, your hair will dread in a free form fashion. When that happens, rip the clumps apart into whatever sections you want. This will be painful, but it's as natural as it gets.

Method not recommended:
Waxing:
Waxing is a fast and easy way to dread your hair, but we don't recommend it. If you start your dreads with wax, what you will get will be glued hair, not dreads. Be warned, waxing can get very expensive and very messy; you can develop mold in your hair, and if you do, your hair may brake and fall off. Wax will make your hair greasy, filthy, and clumpy, not to mention that it will, end up on your pillows. If you want to keep your dreads for a long time, don't wax, it won't be worth your trouble. If you're going to use products to help you, make sure that everything you use is natural.

Useful Advice:

Before you start:
You have to understand that dreads are not an instant thing. Developing dreads will be a long journey; it will take a long time and requires real commitment of your part before your dreads mature. Honestly, if you want dreads don't be afraid, it's ever rewarding, you will discover a lot about yourself, your community and the people around you.

Maintenance:
Once you've started your dreads, eat well and drink a lot of water; its good for you and your hair.

Starting your dreads will require time, dedication and hard work, but if you do it right the first time, it will be worth it.
